Periodization-
The period of 1890-1920 was a response to the rapid economic progress that occurred during the Gilded Age. The rapid industrialization and rampant political corruption led to the beginning of the progressive movement. This was a series of movements that aimed to reform the United States both socially and Politically.
Another thing that characterized the United States during this time period was the differing foreign policy of the United States. The United states started to play a larger role in the affairs of other nations by entering conflicts in Hawaii, Cuba, Panama, and Mexico. This was America asserting herself as a world power and invoking imperialism. They even entered World War I during its later years though they were not directly involved in the conflict.

The war did several things for the development of foreign policy in the government. The Federal government gained influence and power and the war also caused the great migration of African Americans to the North. The war pushed America into the role of isolationism in the coming years, but that would end with the U.S. intervention in World War II.

During the Progressive Era, there were many social reforms. Some were continued from years before and some were new. We see the Social Gospel Movement, Prohibition, and women's suffrage as social reforms. It is during this time that the 18th Amendment establishes prohibition with enforcement by the Volstead Act. We also see establishment of key organizations promoting Women's Suffrage such as the American's Women's suffrage Association and the National Women's Suffrage Association.
Muckrakers such as Henry Demurest Lloyd and Ida Tarbell exposed the corruption of the Gilded Age. This led to many political reforms. The Wisconsin Experiment also exemplified the progressive movement by instituting political reforms in the state of Wisconsin.
This time is also known for Teddy Roosevelt's Square Deal. The Deal had three main parts; controlling cooperations, consumer protection, and Conservation. This was important for its meaningful legislation to make reform on these issues.

This time was known also as an age of growing imperialism. The U.S. had practiced imperialism mainly until now but the U.S. became increasingly involved in the Spanish-American War. Out of this war, we gained the Philippines, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and Guam. The United States was now imperialist. We begin to see imperialism and intervention increase by the Roosevelt Corollary and growing American interest in Europe. Ultimately, we entered the war due to the unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany. We mostly acted as a reinforcement for the allied troops and the war ended about a year later. We ended with Wilson's fourteen points and his attempt to establish the League of Nations.
